DESCRIPTION

The City of Napa is seeking candidates for a part-time Recycling Program Assistant (Part-Time) position assisting our Solid Waste and Recycling Division with community recycling, composting, and solid waste program goals. Do you have interest in outreach and educational campaigns?

We are looking for someone with excellent interpersonal skills that allow for success when interacting with various levels of the Napa Valley School District and local private schools. This position will work approximately 15-20 hours per week. Work hours are between 7:00 AM and 5:00 PM Monday through Friday, and flexibility exists to meet scheduling needs; however, there is an exception with workshops and special events that fall on occasional weekends and evenings.

Note About Temporary & Part-Time Positions: Part-time positions are not to exceed 1,000 hours in a fiscal year (July 1 - June 30). Temporary and part-time employees are at-will and not covered by the Civil Service System. Some benefits for temporary employees include sick leave, temporary employee retirement plan, and 3.5% bilingual pay if applicable.

TYPICAL TASKS

Duties may include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Engage with all levels as needed within Napa schools including students, teachers, custodians, staff, and administration to effectively outreach, educate, and assist to improve waste reduction, recycling, and compost programs at various school sites throughout the City;
  • Conduct onsite assessments to review and record the performance of schools recycling and composting programs and provide needed technical assistance;
  • Facilitate and deliver presentations to local schools, students, and administration regarding recycling, composting, and waste reduction on behalf of the City of Napa;
  • Facilitate, coordinate, and lead school field trips of the City of Napa Recycling and Compost Facility;
  • Assist at workshops and special events as a face of the City of Napa and Napa Recycling & Waste Services;
  • Perform related duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Experience: Interest in environmental and waste reduction fields; Worked independently and without constant supervision; Ability to interact and educate various stakeholders in multiple schools within the City; Familiar with Microsoft Office and basic computer programs and systems.
  • Education: High school diploma or equivalent education.
  • Ability to: Perform physical activities, such as, but not limited to, lifting items (up to 50 lbs.), bending, standing, or walking; Follow oral and written instructions; Work independently; Work in a recycling and compost facility environment, which may be noisy, dusty, unclean, and have strong odors.
  • Special Requirements: Possession and continued maintenance of a Valid California Class "C" Driver's License and a good driving record is required.
  • Proficient in Spanish is desired but not required.
