Job Details

Under the direction of the Registered Nurse and/or designee, the Sitter may be a clinical and/or non-clinical person who provides patient safety services, through visualization, and within close proximity to patient(s) at risk of harming themselves or others. The Sitter's patient population may include individuals with suicidal, psychotic behaviors, or medical conditions causing confusion or inability to comply with healthcare directives. The Sitter does not provide direct patient care but supports the healthcare team by supervising patients to prevent harm.

Responsibilities

• Monitor the behavior and habits of assigned patients in the hospital.
• Communicate any patient needs, concerns, or questions to the supervising RN in a timely manner.
• Safely ambulate with the patient as permitted by the healthcare team.
• Notify healthcare team members when necessary.
• Respect patient and family rights, privacy, and opinions.
• Focus actively on the patient assigned for sitting.
• Refrain from activities other than sitting, such as using cellphones, watching TV, reading, or visiting.
• Show empathy, concern, and a caring approach to patients and families.
• Maintain confidentiality at all times.
• Keep current educational records, including licensure/certification as per hospital policy.
• Assist in crisis situations, including performing CPR and restraining violent patients.
• Understand and respond appropriately to Code announcements (e.g., Code Blue, Red, Gray, Silver) as per the Safety Manual.
• Follow proper Code notification procedures and act calmly during emergencies.

Qualifications

• High School diploma or equivalent.
• Fluent in English.
• Work at least 3 shifts per month to remain active.
• Experience as a licensed/certified healthcare worker (e.g., LVN, ER tech, CNA, medical assistant, mental health worker) or completed an initial Sitter Orientation and Competency course.
• Current BLS certification.
• MABPRO Certification.
