Overview
Solano Community College is seeking highly qualified applicants for part-time adjunct teaching positions in the biology department. The successful candidate, meeting the minimum qualifications outlined below, will be responsible for teaching various areas of biology. Assignments will be available in the fall, spring, and summer terms. The ideal candidate can demonstrate a wide range of teaching strategies to facilitate effective student learning.

ABOUT THE DIVISION and BIOLOGY DEPARTMENT:

At Solano Community College, students learn biology in our new state of the art science teaching laboratories facilities. The newly completed science building in Fairfield is central structure on the main campus. The Biotechnology/Science facilities in Vacaville were completed in 2017 and have assisted thousands of students in their science education. Furthermore, the science and mathematics division run classes on the second floor of the Vallejo Center.
The biology department hosts a robust and rigorous Biology majors' program, pre-allied health education, and teaches non-majors general education biology courses. Microbiology faculty play a central role in teaching students in our Biomedical Sciences certificate and Associates degree program that prepares students for health science professions like nursing, respiratory technology, and other patient care fields. Cell and molecular biology and microbiology serve as a portal to other science fields like biotechnology. The most recent addition to our offerings is the Biomanufacturing Bachelor of Science Degree centered at the new Vacaville facility, one of only two such degrees in the state.

DESCRIPTION:

The successful candidate will teach a variety of biology courses face-to-face at one of our three main locations. The ability to use and expand the use of technology and active learning strategies in the classroom and laboratory will be expected. Skilled candidates who have strong academic backgrounds, and can demonstrate a variety of teaching strategies, are strongly encouraged to apply.
Safety is a priority at Solano Community College, and the successful candidate will be expected to know, follow, implement and enforce all safety rules and standards of the department.
The position will also require providing instruction in accordance with established course outlines and expectations, preparing and grading assignments and examinations, meeting administrative timelines and submitting required documents and reports. Participating in division meetings, while not required, is encouraged and is paid through our flexible professional development program. Successful candidates may be required to assess course-level and program-level learning outcomes depending on the review cycle for the biology department. Paid regular office hours are also encouraged in accordance with the collective bargaining agreement.
WORK ENVIROMENT:

The recommended candidate(s) will work in a small office or larger room with multiple people, in a primarily sedentary nature, either sitting or standing. This role will require significant technology use, including long periods of looking at technology screens and entering information using a keyboard and/or mouse device. Interruptions are likely in large room settings and in small office settings. Frequent use of online meetings technology with webcam on, phone, and email will be required to communicate with all campus communities. The recommended candidate(s) must utilize vision (near) to write and to read printed materials and computer screens; utilize hearing for ordinary and telephonic conversation and to hear sound prompts from equipment; utilize manual and finger dexterity to type/keyboard and/or utilize mouse and otherwise operate a microcomputer and other office equipment.

Teaching assignments may include evening hours and off-campus instruction in accordance with the collective bargaining agreement.
*Must be available to teach in person classes.
Responsibilities
Duties and responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, the following:

  1. Provide instruction in multiple areas of biology in accordance with established instructional and administrative requirements as outlined in the Faculty Handbook.
  2. Evaluate and provide timely verbal and written assessments of student performance.
  3. Prepare and grade assignments and examinations
  4. Meet administrative timelines and submit completed reports and required documents
  5. Maintain required student attendance, scholastic records, and other related materials.
  6. Assist in recruiting students and promoting the Biomedical Sciences Program and the Biotechnology Program.
  7. Participate in the assessment and evaluation of student learning outcomes (SLO) and Program Level Outcomes (PLO).
  8. Actively participate in department/school meetings and maintain regular office hours - adjuncts are not required to do these two things but are encouraged to do them with additional pay in accordance with the collective bargaining agreement and College and School policies.
  9. Voluntary participation in college-wide committee work and collegial governance is encouraged and, in some cases, paid in accordance with the collective bargaining agreement.
  10. Use technology in the academic environment to enhance student learning.
  11. Use equitable teaching practices to create a positive learning environment conducive to learning.
  12. Maintain current knowledge and skills in the area of assignment.
  13. Maintain effective communication with peers, staff, students, and administrators.
  14. Teaching assignments may include evening and weekend hours, and off-campus instruction in accordance with the collective bargaining agreement and College and School policies.
  15. Demonstrated sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students.
  16. Perform other duties as assigned by the Dean of Mathematics and Science.

Minimum Qualifications
A commitment to encouragement of learning and an enthusiastic attitude toward student learning; sensitivity to students from diverse cultural, ethnic, and socio-economic backgrounds who may have wide ranges of abilities.

AND

Master's degree in any biological science; OR A bachelor's degree in biological science and a master's degree in biochemistry, biophysics, or marine science.
OR the equivalent.

Eligibility:

Taught at Solano Community College for at least two semesters (excludes summer session); must be scheduled for a minimum of 40% assignment at the time of enrollment in the health plan; enrollment periods to be determined each semester; once enrolled mandatory participation will be required (participation period to be determined); premiums will be made through payroll deduction and additional premiums due on a monthly basis by check to the Business Office no later than the 10th of each month for the succeeding month's benefits; and other procedures for implementation as determined by the District in consultation with the Association.
