Essential Functions of Position

The ideal candidate will share Reedley College's commitment to educating its racially and socioeconomically diverse student population. We currently enroll over 10,000 students, of which 71% are Latinx, 1% are Filipino, 3% are Asian, 2% are African American, 19% are White, and 3% are multiracial. RC is a Hispanic-Serving Institution, reflecting the great responsibility that the College has to the educational attainment and economic well-being of the surrounding community. The successful candidate will join a department dedicated to curriculum responsive to the students it serves.

The counselor will perform the following:

  • Evaluate verification of disability documentation, identify functional limitations, and arrange for appropriate and reasonable accommodations addressing those limitations.
  • Develop/revise Student Educational Contracts (SECs) and Student Educational Plans (SEPs) for students with disabilities.
  • Facilitate accommodations such as note taking, adaptive equipment, ASL interpreting, testing accommodations, etc.
  • Assist students in the matriculation process, utilizing multiple criteria and placement tests to determine appropriate class placement.
  • Provide specialized academic, career, personal, and disability management counseling to adult students with disabilities from diverse backgrounds.
  • Monitor and track students' academic performance and progress in degree objectives to ensure effective use of services and successful attainment of program objectives.
  • Maintain confidential records; accurately record and complete data entry for mandated reports and service records.
  • Serve as an advocate for students with disabilities, working with instructors, counselors, faculty, other college staff, and community resources to support students' educational goals.
  • Participate in professional development, program development and review, student activities, high school outreach, and faculty committees.
  • Assist with in-service training for faculty, staff, and community.
  • Monday-Friday, with some evenings and Saturdays as required.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Possession of an earned master's degree in rehabilitation counseling;
  • OR an earned master's degree in counseling, guidance counseling, student personnel, clinical or counseling psychology, education counseling, social work, career development, marriage and family therapy, marriage, family, and child counseling;
  • A bachelor's degree in marriage and family therapy or related field with a license as a Marriage and Family Therapist (MFT), plus either fifteen or more semester units related to people with disabilities, or six semester units in counseling practicum or fieldwork in a postsecondary DSPS program, or two years of full-time experience in counseling for students with disabilities or related fields;
  • The equivalent education and/or experience (requires and equivalency);
  • A valid California Community College Credential.

All candidates must demonstrate responsiveness to and understanding of the diverse backgrounds of community college students.

Desirable Qualifications

  • Experience counseling college-level students with disabilities.
  • Experience working with students from diverse cultural backgrounds.
  • Experience working with racially minoritized students and understanding historical patterns of exclusion in higher education.
  • Willingness to examine and improve relational practices to support racially minoritized students.
  • Knowledge of community college mission, ADA, and Rehabilitation Act sections.
  • Experience with learning disabilities assessment.
  • Effective communication skills with students and staff.
  • Proficiency with technology.
  • Ability to work independently and contribute to institutional growth.

Salary and Benefits

Starting rates are $38.30 – $52.05 for non-instructional roles. Sick leave is accrued based on hours worked.
