Job Description
The Project Engineer will offer Project Management and Technical Expertise at an advanced level to execute U.S. Steel's Capital Plan and All Cost Projects within the Tubular Divisions business plan. This role will actively collaborate with other departments to identify opportunities for enhancing the working environment, infrastructure, and cost structure of the facility. The individual will investigate, select, direct, coordinate, and oversee external consultants while managing capital and cost projects, as well as pursuing general improvements in facilities and processes.
The Project Engineer will exercise independent technical judgment to develop feasibility studies and evaluate complex alternatives using data such as production metrics, operating costs, energy consumption, and yields to identify and implement facility improvements. Combining an awareness of plant quality, yield, and spending requirements with a comprehensive understanding of industry processes, equipment, and material usage, the Project Engineer will pinpoint opportunities for facility or practice enhancements.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
* Provide technical assistance to the operations and other functional staff
* Follow and enforce US Steel Safety & Environmental standards
* Oversee project planning, coordination, resource management, risk management, documentation/reporting, team leadership/communication, and technical oversight
* Implement and execute USS employee and contractor safety and environmental compliance programs
* Manage capital and cost projects, including defining the business case, initial planning, developing scope, determining benefits, and estimating costs
* Evaluate and select the best available technology to address assigned tasks through networking with internal and external resources
* Participate in the project capital or cost funding decision process alongside Accounting and Tax personnel
* Prepare necessary capital appropriation or cost expenditure requests for presentation to the Plant Appropriation Committee and Corporate Management
* Direct outside engineering firms in preparing detailed equipment and installation specifications and design drawings, as well as providing inspection services as requested
* Ensure projects adhere to budget constraints and spending schedules
* Perform comprehensive technical reviews of equipment supplier proposals and recommend suitable equipment purchases
* Conduct thorough reviews of contractor installation proposals and recommend appropriate suppliers
* Monitor equipment manufactures and assembly to ensure compliance with specifications and delivery schedules
* Manage equipment installations or modifications, which may require extended hours and/or weekend work
* Provide necessary training and startup support to commission new equipment according to schedule and achieve stated objectives
* Maintain up to date knowledge of current technology through plant visits, continuing education, seminars, and technical exchanges.
REQUIREMENTS:
* Bachelor of Science Degree in Engineering / Scientific discipline required.
* 8+ years of project management experience
* 3-5 years of experience working in industrial plants or prior military experience
* Must possess the skills necessary to utilize the commonly accepted tools for project development, control, and execution such as Microsoft Project, Word, Excel, Power Point and similar software tools.
* Capital project management experience or equivalent experience managing maintenance outage work or improvement teams is desired.
* Strong organizational, communication, and problem-solving skills are essential
