Senior Director, Technical Operations Sourcing & Procurement

Role Scope

The Sr. Director leads a team of procurement professionals supporting the Technical Operations organization with $600M+ annual spend. The primary customer organization manufactures medicine through internal and external sites. The leader drives industry‑leading procurement practices, builds deep stakeholder relationships, drives innovation, and mentors the team.

Responsibilities

  • Establish and execute category strategies for Direct Materials (single‑use technologies, resin, chemical & media), Primary and Secondary Packaging, Contract Manufacturing Organizations (CMOs & CDMOs), Construction and Capital Spend, Facilities Management, Real Estate, and Site Services.
  • Collaborate with category leaders across Global Sourcing & Procurement to optimize TOPS and align GSP with manufacturing site objectives.
  • Plan strategically and align projects with BioMarin goals; design and shepherd sourcing and category strategies.
  • Build credibility through relationships with senior stakeholders; serve as procurement accountability for the Technical Operations Leadership team.
  • Develop productive relationships with key suppliers and support corporate finance initiatives.
  • Maintain industry trends and functional practices through participation in professional organizations.
  • Demonstrate deep knowledge of Source to Pay process including supporting technology to optimize operations.
  • Deliver measurable outcomes: hard and soft savings, SLA/KPI performance, multi‑year road map of opportunities.
  • Lead complex negotiations requiring detailed strategic plans aligned with operational business goals.

Qualifications

  • Minimum Bachelor's Degree in Business, Supply Chain Management or related field. MBA or post‑graduate qualifications are an advantage.
  • 15+ years of procurement, sourcing or supply chain experience in a global capacity, preferably within the pharmaceutical sector.
  • Senior procurement leadership in the pharmaceutical or biotechnology industry with regulatory knowledge.
  • Experience with procurement technology, preference for Ariba / SAP.
  • Expertise in sourcing direct materials, primary packaging, contract manufacturing, facilities management and site services.
  • Strong analytical, written and verbal communication and influencing skills.
  • Strong networking skills and proven ability to build productive relationships with stakeholders and business partners.
  • Results‑driven with a growth mindset and capabilities.
  • Motivated, high‑energy, curious, self‑starter with a strong business mindset.
  • Ability to work in high‑pressure environments, often under tight deadlines.

Area of Specialization

  • Proficiency with Ariba and SAP sourcing, quotation analysis, contract negotiation, supplier review, supplier development.
  • Demonstrated expertise in category strategy development, stakeholder management and supplier relationship management.
  • Strong knowledge of finance (cost benchmark, financial audit with key suppliers) and legal matters (contracting).
  • Clear understanding of business value, business priorities and potential implementation risks.

Travel Requirements

  • Periodic travel to BioMarin sites and supplier locations.

Workstyle

  • Hybrid requiring local presence: Novato campus onsite 2x each week.
