The Position
This recruitment is being conducted to fill one (1) extra help position of Cook III at Napa County's Department of Corrections. The eligibility list established from this recruitment will be used to fill current and future Extra Help vacancies as they occur over the next 12 months.

About the Position of Cook III

  • Hourly Rate: $31.82(Step 1)
  • Extra Help positions are temporary assignments that are scheduled up to 29 hours per week (up to 1,000 hours per fiscal year.)
  • Extra Help employees are not eligible for promotional opportunities that are open to regular part-time and full-time employees.
Napa County's Department of Corrections is responsible for the coordination of all programs and services related to the institutional care, treatment and rehabilitation of incarcerated persons including: Classification, Diagnosis, Intake screening, and Programs that deal with sentencing alternatives. The Cook III is responsible for directing and participating in the activities at the Napa County Department of Corrections, which is an institutional kitchen serving meals to a large number of people. Additionally, the Cook III will be responsible for receiving and conducting inventory a variety of food items and kitchen, laundry, and cleaning supplies, as well as training and directing the work of incarcerated persons assigned to kitchen and laundry duties. The ideal candidate will have at least three years of experience in preparing, cooking, baking, and serving meals in a large (150 meals or more per sitting) institution or a large commercial or hotel kitchen, with at least six months performing these duties in a correctional institution.
Position Requirements:
Persons employed in this class must be willing to work early morning shifts, evenings, holidays, and weekends. Any combination of education and experience that would likely provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge, skills, and abilities would be:
  • Experience: Three years of experience in preparing, cooking, baking, and serving meals in a large (150 meals or more per sitting) institution or a large commercial or hotel kitchen, with at least six months performing these duties in a correctional institution.
  • Education: Equivalent to the completion of the twelfth grade, preferably supplemented by specialized training in culinary skills. (Additional qualifying experience in commercial or institutional cooking may be substituted for up to two years of the education on a year-for-year basis.)
  • License or Certificate: Possession of a valid California Driver's License.*
*Any license, certification, or registration required for this position shall be maintained (i.e. active and in good standing) at all times during employment with Napa County. For continued employment with Napa County, you must maintain such license, certification, or registration to meet the minimum qualifications of this position.
