The Public Works Department is responsible for the design, engineering, operations and maintenance of all City infrastructure. The Department is organized into several divisions. Service Workers work in Parks Maintenance, Streets and Storm Drains, Water Distribution, Wastewater Collections, and Buildings. Service Workers play a key role in keeping all these systems working properly for City residents, businesses and visitors every day. American Canyon is looking for skilled workers to perform routine and preventative infrastructure maintenance. We want people with hands on experience and skills they can demonstrate, but an attitude of community service and teamwork ahead of personal gain. Service Workers perform a variety of maintenance and construction duties and operate public works, maintenance and utilities equipment. Initial hires and assignments are made to a specific division, although Service Workers may be reassigned to any of the sections at any time for business or career development reasons. Service Workers perform an array of general clean-up and maintenance tasks in various City departments and provide assistance to regular workers engaged in skilled and semi-skilled work. Deliver and operate miscellaneous equipment as required. Work mainly involves performance of prescribed tasks in predictable order with minimal exceptions to standard procedures. DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS This is the temporary job class that is used for workload peaks and seasonal projects in a variety of field assignments. Employees cannot work more than 1000 hours in a fiscal year.

Minimum Qualifications: Experience: Some experience performing manual labor.
License Requirement: Possession of a valid California Class C Driver License at the time of the temporary hire. Individuals who do not meet this requirement due to a physical disability will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis. Physical Requirements: Work is performed in a typical outdoor environment on a year-round basis. (1) Mobility: frequent performance of heavy manual labor; frequent standing for long periods of time; frequent bending and squatting. (2) Lifting: frequent lifting up to 50 pounds; occasional lifting up to 75 pounds. (3) Vision: constant use of overall vision. (4) Dexterity: frequent grasping, holding, and reaching. (5) Hearing/Talking: frequent hearing and talking in person. (6) Emotional/Psychological: frequent coworker contact; occasional working alone. (7) Environmental: frequent exposure to loud noise; frequent exposure to chemicals, fumes, and other environmental substances. Other Requirements: Some positions may require evening, weekend, or other shift work.
