Position OverviewThe Dispatcher - Per Diem is a journey-level dispatcher of emergency public safety personnel who works on a temporary, as-needed basis for the Martinez Police Department. Under general supervision, the Police Dispatcher facilitates communication between members of the public and police department personnel as well as other public service agencies.ResponsibilitiesReceives calls for service and dispatches department personnel via radio, computer or telephoneOperates radio, computer, telecommunications and related equipmentMaintains, enters information into and queries local, regional and national computer databasesUses department computer aided dispatch software and records management system software to input data that facilitates the dispatching and recording of law enforcement and other operational tasks of the Martinez Police DepartmentWorks shifts, holidays and weekends as requiredAll activities are performed within specified legal guidelinesReports to the Dispatch SupervisorWorks independently and exercises judgment and initiativeQualificationsAny combination of education and experience that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:Prior dispatcher experience and demonstrated proficiency in the techniques and methods of radio dispatching involving public safety operationsCapability to handle emergency situations requiring independent judgment where unprecedented situations may ariseValid Public Safety Dispatcher Basic Certificate issued by the California Commission on Peace Officer Standards and Training (P.O.S.T.)Minimum of two (2) years of experience using the Sun Ridge RIMS Computer-Aided Dispatch SystemValid California driver's licenseSuccessful completion of a thorough background investigation, polygraph test, and psychological evaluationOther RequirementsMust be able to work shifts including weekends and holidaysMaximum of 960 hours per fiscal year; position is not eligible for City benefitsPaid sick leave will be accrued in accordance with the Healthy Workplaces/Healthy Families Act of 2014 (Assembly Bill 1522)Selection ProcessApplication screening will evaluate resumes, supplemental questionnaire and other required documentation on a comparative basis.
